I was a little surprised to learn that there are five films in the HOME ALONE franchise. When did that happen? I’m probably not alone in only remembering the first two films in the series, both starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, but it seems that the franchise is due for a return of sorts. Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox is looking to tap into the spirit of the Chris Columbus film with STONED ALONE, a comedy which is set to be produced by Ryan Reynolds through his Maximum Effort banner.
What’s the deal behind STONED ALONE? Well, I’m pretty sure you can figure that out for yourselves based on the title, but here we go. The film will be centered around a “twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle.” Said to be a blend of the John Hughes-scripted family film and the R-rating irreverence which Ryan Reynolds holds dear, STONED ALONE is set to be directed by Augustine Frizzell (NEVER GOIN’ BACK) from a script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Although Ryan Reynolds is only onboard as a producer at this point, Deadline makes sure to note that he could potentially play a role in STONED ALONE as well. I suppose it sounds like it could be interesting, plus, when was our last great stoner comedy?
Ryan Reynolds will next be seen taking on the title role in Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ DETECTIVE PIKACHU, which is slated for a May 10, 2019 release.
