As we know, HELLBOY hit theaters just several days ago, but unfortunately, the film received largely negative reviews and has performed poorly at the box-office. Not exactly the ingredients with which to cook up a sequel. Making a movie is damn hard work and no one sets out to create a bad one, so I can imagine that it must hurt when something you’d had a hand in creating is immediately trashed upon arrival.
Milla Jovovich, who plays Nimue the Blood Queen in HELLBOY, took to Instagram over the weekend to comment on the film’s negative reviews. “It’s always stressful on opening weekend and [HELLBOY] is no different,” Jovovich said. “You work super hard to make something fun and entertaining and have to absorb the negative reviews by movie critics, but hey! THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY.” The actress went on to say that many of her past films which has gone on to become classics were initially savaged by critics, including DAZED AND CONFUSED and THE FIFTH ELEMENT. Milla Jovovich seems confident that the future will be just as kind to HELLBOY.
I haven’t yet seen HELLBOY for myself so I can’t comment on just how bad the film may or may not be, so I’ll leave it up to you. Has HELLBOY been unfairly treated or does it deserve the bad reviews it’s received?
The official synopsis for HELLBOY:
Hellboy is back, and he’s on fire. From the pages of Mike Mignola’s seminal work, this action packed story sees the legendary half-demon superhero (David Harbour, “Stranger Things”) called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich, Resident Evil series), a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.
HELLBOY is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray!
