The first reactions to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood have arrived! This is the ninth movie from Tarantino and, if we’re to take him at his word, it could be his second to last. So it’s no small thing. The movie recently held its premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and was one of the most highly-anticipated titles playing at the prestigious festival. So how did it go over?
According to the first wave of early reactions, swimmingly. The vast majority of those who have posted reactions to the movie on social media are praising the filmmaker’s love letter to old school Hollywood. Apparently, Quentin Tarantino and the cast were given a standing ovation between six and seven minutes long, which says a lot. The National Post’s Chris Knight had this to say about it on Twitter.
“I laughed. I gasped. I wondered: What would Roman Polanski think? I begrudgingly agreed not to tweet out spoilers. Tarantino delivers an ode to Hollywood’s lost innocence, while cheekily suggesting it never had any to begin with.”
Quentin Tarantino penned an open letter ahead of the premiere asking that those reviewing the movie not discuss anything that could spoil the movie for audiences who will have to wait and see the movie this summer. So far, it seems like those sharing their reactions are choosing to honor that. Deadline’s Joe Utichi, in his Twitter reaction, praised this as the movie Tarantino was born to make.
“Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood is so gloriously, wickedly indulgent, compelling and hilarious. The film QT was born to make. The world is a more colourful place in Quentin Tarantino’s twilight zone. Round two, please.”
Virtually all of the reactions make a point to praise the performances. The 1969 set period drama, in part, deals with Charles Manson and his most famous victim, actress Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie. Her performance was singled out quite a bit. The duel leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, are also receiving a great deal of praise. They lead the way as a washed-up actor and his best friend/stunt man. The Playlist’s Jordan Ruimy is one of few that approached negativity in his reaction, having this to say.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: QT’s latest has some of the best sequences of his career, but also some of the draggiest. A scrambling, ambitious, maddening, beautiful film. Brad Pitt steals the show. DiCaprio, as always, fantastic.”
It sounds like a few draggy sequences may be a small price to pay for what this movie has to offer. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is set to arrive in theaters on July 26 from Sony Pictures. Be sure to check out the reactions from Twitter that we’ve collected below.
