We have a brand new, red-band trailer for Escape Plan: The Extractors that brings the home-video Sylvester Stallone action someone out there has probably been craving. This is, amazingly, the third entry in this franchise, which kicked off with a big screen edition in 2013 and co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger after he left political office. Now, Stallone has teamed up with Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista and 50 Cent for an action-packed hostage situation.
For the most part, these direct-to-video action flicks seem to be a dime a dozen and rarely stand out. Based on the trailer at least, this actually looks like it could easily deliver enough thrills to justify spending $1.50 to rent this from a Redbox on a Wednesday night. The trailer kicks off with Sly leading a happy life before his girlfriend is kidnapped. He then has to put together a team for a dangerous extraction mission (as the title implies). It then erupts into a barrage of one-liners and wild, violent action, set to a nu-metal soundtrack. As these things go, it seems pretty entertaining.
Escape Plan: The Extractors centers on security expert Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone), who is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a major Hong Kong tech mogul, who is being held captive in a well-guarded Latvian prison. Breslin’s girlfriend (Jaime King) has also been captured, which makes things personal for him. Now, Breslin and his team must execute a deadly rescue mission that will bring them face-to-face with their new foe in order to save the hostages before time runs out. John Herzfeld (Reach Me) is in the director’s chair, taking over for Steven C. Miller, who helmed last year’s Escape Plan 2: Hades. Max Zhang and Devon Sawa also star.
As for what action lovers will get if they decide to pick the movie up, the Digital 4K Ultra HD copy, Blu-ray and DVD all include an audio commentary with director John Herzfeld, Sylvester Stallone, Devon Sawa, and Daniel Bernhardt. There’s also a featurette, The Making of Escape Plan: Extractors, which features cast and crew interviews that break down the process of bringing the flick to life. The Blu-ray Combo Pack will retail for $24.99, while the DVD will be available for $19.98. We’ve included the Blu-ray box art below.
2013’s Escape Plan, helmed by Mikael Hafstrom, wound up being a decent hit at the box office, bringing in $137 million worldwide. So, the plan was hatched to make a sequel. Before the second entry was even released, the producers gave the green light to Escape Plan 3. However, it was decided, for various reasons, that the next two entries should go straight-to-video instead of getting a theatrical release. Escape Plan: The Extraction is set to arrive on July 2.
