James Gunn is currently hard at work developing a Suicide Squad reboot for Warner Bros., and according to a new rumor, he might soon be doing even more for the company. A new report is suggesting WB is eyeing Gunn for a potential Justice League reboot as well. Per the rumor, Gunn will oversee the project creatively, and it’s also possible he would direct. Of course, that would likely depend on his availability, as Gunn will also be working on Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 following The Suicide Squad and he just may not have the availability for it.
If the report about James Gunn is accurate, the lineup of DC superheroes to be a part of the team in the reboot are Superman, Batman, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Aquaman, The Flash, and Green Lantern. Darkseid is also rumored to be the movie’s villain. However, what isn’t clear is if this vision would somehow be a continuation of the previous movie as another installment of the DCEU, or if this will be an entirely new vision taking place in a separate universe. Given Gunn’s involvement with The Suicide Squad, it would stand to reason a Justice League reboot would tie into that if the filmmaker turns out to be the one to lead the project.
This week would have seen the release of the planned Justice League sequel if the movie had been as big of a hit WB and DC had been hoping for. The movie fell well short of expectations and did not see the same levels of success as The Avengers and its sequels. Because of this, plans were scrapped to continue the story in new sequels, although some of its characters will still be seen again in their own solo movies. This includes Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in the upcoming Aquaman 2 and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman 1984. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad will also be back as well in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Still, WB is branching out beyond the DCEU with other movies taking place in separate universes. This year will see the release of the origin story Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime. Similarly, Robert Pattinson will play Bruce Wayne in The Batman, which will arrive in theaters in 2021. Both movies will have no relation to the installments of the DCEU, presenting entirely new versions of the DC characters with their own new stories. It remains to be seen if the box office performances of these movies will be more profitable than the movies from the DCEU.
With no official verification, this new rumor should be taken at best at face value. However, it’s noted that the source of this rumor was also the first to break the story about Robert Pattinson’s casting in The Batman, which wound up being true. Ultimately, time will tell if this new rumor about Gunn’s involvement in a Justice League reboot will be proven as well. This information comes to us from WeGotThisCovered.
