Former Walking Dead star Steven Yeun has landed his next movie role, as it’s now being reported he will star in writer-director Isaac Chung’s upcoming movie Minari. In addition to starring in the movie, Yeun will also executive produce, marking the first time the actor has served as a producer. A24 is financing and producing along with Chung, Yeun, and Plan B. Also starring in the movie will be Will Patton (Halloween), Scott Haze (Venom), and Korean actresses Yeri Han (A Quiet Dream) and Youn Yuh-Jung (The Bacchus Lady) making their U.S. film debut.
Minari tells the story of a Korean family chasing the American Dream in rural Arkansas in the 1980s. The plot is influenced by Chung’s own real-life experience as the son of Korean immigrants in rural Arkansas. On a personal level, Steven Yeun will be able to relate to the role in some ways, given his own status as an immigrant. The future TV and movie star was originally born in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to Michigan where he grew up. In Minari, Yeun will star as a Korean father who uproots his family for a better life in the United States, purchasing a plot of farmland in Arkansas.
Of course, Yeun is best known for playing the part of Glenn Rhee on the popular AMC zombie drama series, The Walking Dead. The character had been a fan favorite since his introduction at the very start of the show, and played a vital role throughout the first six seasons of the long-running series. Unfortunately, his run came to an end at the start of the seventh season when the character was bludgeoned to death by the nefarious Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). While shocking, the moment turned out to have a detrimental effect on the show’s viewership. Immediately following Glenn’s death, around five million viewers left the series along with him, and ratings have been on a steady decline ever since.
Since finishing his time on The Walking Dead, Yeun has kept himself busy by taking on new movie roles. Soon after, he starred in the Joe Lynch action horror movie Mayhem and Bong Joon-ho’s action-adventure Okja. Later, Yeun appeared in an acclaimed performance as a mysterious character in Lee Chang-dong’s South Korean mystery movie Burning. For the part, Yeun won Best Supporting Actor awards at various awrds shows, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and the National Society of Film Critics Awards. More recently, Yeun appeared in a starring role on an episode of Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access. He will also lend his voice to the upcoming animated series Invincible, which is also adapted from a Robert Kirkman comic.
Clearly, saying goodbye to Glenn is not slowing down Yeun, as there are many more roles yet to come for the former Walking Dead star. For fans of the actor, Minari is definitely going to be a must-see movie. No word yet on an official release date. This information comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
