SEARCHING may not seem like the most likely film to receive a sequel, but the little techno-thriller which could quickly became a critical and commercial success upon its release last year. The film centered around David Kim (John Cho), a father whose 16-year-old daughter goes missing. When the investigative team fails to come up with a single lead, Kim begins looking into her disappearance himself by diving into his daughter’s laptop. In fact, the entire film is told through computer and smart device screens.
Deadline has reported that Sony’s Stage 6 Films are beginning to develop a sequel to SEARCHING and that the original creative team will return. However, if you’re hoping to see John Cho pop up again, you’re out of luck. SEARCHING director/co-writer Aneesh Chaganty took to Twitter to claify that the SEARCHING sequel will feature a new plot and cast. “The story will NOT follow the same characters or plot line as the original,” Chaganty said. “We all see this second installment as a wonderful opportunity to tell another original tech-driven thriller. With all due respect to Taken, this is not Taken.“
The official synopsis for SEARCHING:
After David Kim’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
