Taika Waititi in talks to join James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

It’s become quite clear that Taika Waititi is quickly evolving into one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood. For the moment, Waititi is preparing for the debut of his anti-hate satire JOJO RABBIT, which is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2019. Beyond that, the WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS creative is also readying Marvel’s THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER as well as his next directorial effort, NEXT GOAL WINS. With seemingly no hours left in his busy schedule for a proper night’s rest, it’s been reported by Deadline that Waititi is in talks for a part in James Gunn‘s THE SUICIDE SQUAD. Sadly, like many of these “hot off the presses” announcements, we’ve no insight with regard to who he’d be playing in the upcoming film. Truth be told, we’ve yet to learn whether he’ll play a major or minor role.

However, word around the old water cooler is that a table read for THE SUICIDE SQUAD is scheduled for September 11, with production looking to begin starting on September 23.

Previously, Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) as well as new castmembers Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher) and Flula Borg were all been confirmed for the film. Moreover, we’d recently learned that Nathan Fillion will be joining the cast, as will Steve Agee, who is set to voice the character King Shark.

Gunn is set to write and direct the “worst of the worst” reboot, which has Chuck Roven and Peter Safran producing and Nik Korda serving as executive producer.

Boy oh boy, you just can’t keep a good Waititi down, can you? The man is all over the map lately, and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. In truth, I’ve no clue as to who he could be playing in Gunn’s upcoming supervillain film, though I’m pretty sure the primary roster is quite full. Perhaps he’ll play one of the villains who are yet to be revealed? Or maybe he’ll act as Amanda Waller’s right hand man? Will he serve as fish food for King Shark? The possibilities are endless, as Waititi is never afraid to get weird in front of the camera. I say bring it on, as the wackier this film is the better. Anything to seperate it from Ayer’s 2016 original, amiright?

James Gunn‘s THE SUICIDE SQUAD is slated for an August 6, 2021 release.
