M. Night Shyamalan Calls His Next 3 Movies Weird and Dark

M. Night Shyamalan has not two, but three movies in development. The director says that the three movies are “weird and dark.” Shyamalan does things by his own rules and self-finances his projects, giving him even more freedom to do whatever he wants. This has its drawbacks at times because there is nobody to blame but himself when he doesn’t hit the bullseye. The reactions to Glass left him heartbroken, but he was the one behind it, so he benefitted financially when the movie was a box office success.

M. Night Shyamalan is currently out promoting AppleTV+’s new series Servant. The director can’t just talk about the series, since everybody wants to know what exactly is going on with these new movies that he has coming out. There is an M. Night Shyamalan 2021 movie and an M. Night Shyamalan 2023 movie coming. When asked if the projects were connected, the director said no, but did reveal he has an idea for a third. He explains.

“I just had two movie ideas I felt very strongly about. For me, there are ideas and they’re in journals sometimes and they don’t quite have the meat yet or whatever that thing is that makes it so I’m ready to commit two years of my life to making this-to writing and directing this-some of those ideas don’t have that yet. They have to gestate a little bit. But there were two ideas where right away I was thinking about making them. And, interesting enough, there might be a third thing that came to me that might end up going in between these two. So there might be three.”

While the upcoming projects are not connected, they will have some connective tissue in terms of tone. M. Night Shyamalan knows what he’s doing at this point and he knows how to accomplish what he wants to see on the big screen. And it seems like he will be working pretty quickly to get all three projects done. Shyamalan had this to say.

“I’m loving this approach from The Visit on where they’re minimal, contained, I own them, we take big tonal risks and try to hit that note of absurd-but-grounded, that dark humor moment and deal with some complicated things and not necessarily take the audience where they’re comfortable, both during, or even at the end. That’s all mitigated because we’re working with a respectable number and I feel like I’m being a good partner to my distributors.

I like that because it allows me to iterate really fast in the making of these stories, so those films follow that architecture of approach and process. Even if it’s tricking myself into being more dangerous, it’s working because when I think about these three films that I’m thinking about-all weird and dark-I think that they speak to each other a little bit.”

Weird and dark” certainly sounds intriguing coming from M. Night Shyamalan. The director will not comment on what the movies are going to be about, though he previously said they will have unexpected tones. Weird and dark could fit that mold very well, especially when Shyamalan says he wants “big tonal risks and try to hit that note of absurd-but-grounded” dark humor.
