Former President Barack Obama has revealed his favorite movies and TV shows of 2019. Obama has made this something of an annual tradition, dating back to his days in office. This year is no exception, as he’s been taking the final days of the year to share some of his favorite works of art across all forms of media. Now, he’s revealed what movies he enjoyed most in the final year of the decade.
Obama’s list was filled with critically-acclaimed movies, some of which flew under the radar, such as Birds of Passage and The Last Black Man in San Fransisco. Obama also included some of the most-discussed movies released this year, including Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite. Obama shared the list on Twitter and had this to say.
“Next up are my favorite movies and TV shows of 2019. Of course, there’s also American Factory, a film from our own production company, Higher Ground, that was recently shortlisted for an Oscar.”
The former POTUS currently has a large, all-encompassing production deal in place at Netflix that sees him and his wife Michelle Obama producing content for the streaming service. American Factory is one such project. Over on Facebook, Barack Obama offered a more robust explanation of why he’s made sharing these lists a tradition that he intends to keep his post-presidential life.
“Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing my annual list of favorites, books, films, and music, with all of you. This has become a fun little tradition for me, and I hope it is for you, too. Because while each of us has plenty that keeps us busy, work and family life, social and volunteer commitments, outlets like literature and art can enhance our day-to-day experiences.
They’re the fabric that helps make up a life, the album that lifts us up after a long day, the dog-eared paperback we grab off the shelf to give to a friend, the movie that makes us think and feel in a new way, works that simply help us escape for a bit. To start, here are the books that made the last year a little brighter for me. Most of them came out in 2019, but a few were older ones that were new to me this year. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.”
Interestingly, Obama’s list also included a few TV shows. As Obama notes, he considered these shows “as powerful as movies.” Fleabag season 2, Unvelievable and Watchmen all made the list. All of the shows Obama listed are amongst the most acclaimed of the year. HBO’s Watchmen, specifically, recently wrapped up an impressive first season on HBO.
For what it may be worth, the “biggest” movie on the list, in terms of box office, is Ford vs Ferrari. Many of Obama’s picks were indie flicks and documentaries. Be sure to check out the full list for yourself from Barack Obama’s Twitter.
