It’s alright! Mark-Paul Gosselaar is returning for Saved By The Bell revival

Ahhh the early 1990s! A time when fanny packs were all the rage, the bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam were coming into their own, and Twitter was just something birds did. It was also an era where after-school teen comedies ruled the day and none was mightier than NBC’s Saved By The Bell. Saved By The Bell followed the exploits of Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, Screech Powers, Lisa Turtle, Jessie Spano, and A.C. Slater as they navigated the social jungle of Bayside High and ran afoul of Principal Richard Belding. The show ran for four seasons and spawned a pair of spinoffs and two television films including Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style. If you haven’t seen that last, according to Will Ferrell‘s James Lipton, “It is a delight!”

In recent years popular shows from the 1990s have been revived for the 21st century to varying degrees of success. The X-Files enjoyed two brand new seasons and The Conners (a revival of Roseanne) is about to be renewed for a third season. Not to be outdone, NBC’s upcoming streaming service Peacock decided to dip their feathers into the revival game, choosing to bring back Saved By The Bell for a new generation. While both Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez signed on to reprise their roles of Jesse Spano and A.C. Slater respectively and Tiffany-Amber Thiessen is in negotiations to return as Kelly, one name was notably absent from the mix. Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played rich, smooth talking lead Zach Morris on the show was nowhere to be found. Well grab your brick sized cell phones kids and toss them in the air in celebration because Zack is back.

Gosselaar has just closed a deal to return for the Saved By The Bell revival. The actor will appear in three episodes and also executive produce. If you’re wondering why Gosselaar is only returning for three episodes there’s a reason for that. The actor currently has a reoccurring role on the ABC show Mixed-ish. Since ABC and NBC are obviously different studios, this limits his involvement. Three episodes is typically the industry standard.

For those of you wondering what the revival will be about, the new Saved By The Bell will, “explore what happens when Zack, now the governor of California, gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High.” Zack Morris as governor? I’d say it sounds unbelievable but considering the current President of the United States is the former host of Celebrity Apprentice, it’s not that far outside the realm of possibility.
